Crooked Lane Books / Alcove Press (CLB/AP) is looking for an entrepreneurial, ambitious, and adaptive Publishing Operations Director to join our team. The position is for problem-solvers who enjoy working across departments. Candidates will be expected to think and act strategically while demonstrating the hands-on skills necessary to implement innovative and effective publishing campaigns. This role reports directly to the Publisher and oversees sales, production, marketing, and business affairs to achieve strategic goals. It is a unique position that has immediate impact and provides the kind of broad exposure and professional growth that can’t be found anywhere else in publishing.


Essential job responsibilities include:

  • Establish clearly defined publishing goals across all imprints, departments, and individual titles and maintain reporting structures to achieve those goals in a timely manner
  • Manage the publication of 100+ frontlist titles a year from acquisition through post-publication
  • Optimize printing, inventory, and supply-chain processes and decisions
  • Coordinate all sales initiatives with external sales and distribution team at Penguin Random House, including coop, launch meetings, sales conferences, and day-to-day interaction
  • Use internal and external data sources to track, analyze, and report on the effectiveness of sales and marking initiatives at key accounts for seasonal lists, key titles, and special projects, and implement substantial improvements wherever possible
  • Provide regular and ad-hoc sales and financial reporting, including annual and seasonal budgets, monthly P&Ls, and title profitability analysis
  • Run business affairs and contracts including the negotiation of terms
  • Oversee subsidiary rights program and representatives to expand the program and drive growth
  • Coach, mentor and raise the team’s ability to deliver on and exceed expectations
  • As part of senior management, develop long-range business strategies for CLB/AP and assume management of select long-range projects as determined by the publisher



About you:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • 8 years of trade publishing experience, 5 years of direct experience in publishing operations or publisher’s office, and 3 years of management experience
  • Strong analytical, planning and budgeting skills along with the ability to report and present results to key stakeholders is a must
  • Excellent Microsoft Office computing skills, especially Excel
  • Results driven and aggressive when it comes to taking ownership of projects or situations to achieve goals
  • A strategic thinker who can identify long-terms goals, define gaps, and effectively manage resources along a strategic roadmap
  • Organized, detail-oriented and able to execute multiple projects at any given time
  • Poised for rapid professional growth
